The handling and movement of pigs towards the stunning area should be conducted in accordance with their biological needs to minimize pain and distress, as these can lead to hesitations, halting, piling up, turning back, slipping or falling during the slaughter process.
To ensure optimal procedures at each stage of the process - unloading from the vehicle, lairage, moving to the stunning area, stunning itself, possible hoisting operations and debleeding - a specific Standard Operating Procedure must be implemented.
